Lovespirals' new album is mastered!

Anji and I spent this past weekend mastering our upcoming album, Long Way From Home, with Robert Rich in his studio in Mountain View, California. In addition to all the great locally grown food and wine we were treated to and the fun time we had hanging with Robert, the mastering came out really well. I mean really well. I can’t believe how nice it all sounds. This is quite exciting as mastering for me in the past has been primarily about trying to deal with audio deficiencies that were in my original mixes. I guess I’ve gotten better over the years, as there were very few such issues. Instead, Robert was able to focus on perfecting the sound, which he did an amazing job of. Thank you Robert (if you happen to read this)!

New song #2

We’re really on a roll this year. Finished up another new song last night that we’re both really into. We exercised great control and kept it down to just over 3 minutes. You know us, we’ve been tending to stretch out every song with long meandering outros and solo sections… Most every song on Free and Easy is over 5 minutes. But this latest one is compact, even a bit spare by our standards. No drums or bass, a minimum of electric guitar, and no full keyboard part – just a few notes at the end. Maybe we’ll put a snatch of it on the next podcast? Oh, I should mention it’s called “Empty Universe”…

Recording a new song

The night before last, Ryan and I wrote a new song. We’ve been writing quite a few songs the past couple months, but this one really seemed special. It was one of those songs that came together very quickly, magickly. We made a little demo of it with my new Spike system. Then last night we actually began recording the song in the studio. Ryan really kicked ass, too, and got most of it done. I threw down a scratch track of vocals for him to work around. I’ll probably record the real thing in the next few days. Maybe we’ll play a snippet on our next podcast? Oh, it’s called “Caught in the Groove.”

New tune

Even though we’re wrapping up the current album, we couldn’t help but work on some new music recently. For the first time, Ryan offered to try playing guitar along to my vocals, instead of the other way around. He had sworn he couldn’t write music to lyrics, but I think our first attempt sounded pretty good. It’s a lyric I’ve been carrying around in my head for a few years now and had really wanted to do with Ryan. I once worked on a demo of them for a Bitstream Dream song, but something at the last minute pulled me away… Sometimes I really feel strongly about a song being “right” for Lovespirals, I can’t say why exactly. Anyway, hopefully this will be one of the demos we work up to a full song for the 3rd album. We’ve got quite a cache of partly written jams saved up. I guess that’s why we need to get this album out and gone, so we can start on the next with a fresh slate!

This song would likely be called “Sundrenched Tears,” BTW.
